Descartes’s secret notebook… Le carnet secret de Descartes… - Amir D. Aczel
In this 1st June 1676, the genius mathematician Leibniz knocks on the door of Mr. Clerselier in order to consult Descartes’s writings contained in a case arrived from Sweden after his death. In this latter he discovers a small notebook of sixteen pages filled of mysterious signs whose he succeeds to decode only some pages. What thus contains this mysterious notebook? Is its code inspired by secret societies flourishing at this time? The US mathematician and journalist Amir D. Aczel involve us through Europe on the steps of one of the most fabulous spirits of the XVII century. At this time the theories of Copernic and Keplerare still judged heretics and it is perhaps the reason for which Descartes will prefer to camouflage, mainly to the Church, some ideas considered to be too dangerous. This “historic and philosophic” thriller is at the same time a police investigation story, a biography and an historical story, and allows us to revise Descartes, the man, the scientist and the philosopher without being bored nor to have the feeling to come back to school. The author also returns to Descartes the paternity of some mathematical discovers, such the discovery of a property of the five regular solids, which amplify more its genius. Very beautiful work in which the author restores us a formidable and scientific adventure around an enigma which continues to fascinate, this while respecting the historical truth. To read…
je ne suis pas fan de math, mais ça peut être intéressant si c'est bien écrit
